September Is North America Pet Health Insurance Month

September 2010 marks the second year that pet insurance companies in the United States and Canada are joining together to celebrate North American Pet Health Insurance Month, presented by the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).

Everyday across North America hundreds and on some days thousands of pets face economic euthanasia at veterinary hospitals because pet owners are not prepared to provide needed cars.  Importantly, these are not pets that require extensive treatments or a course of care that would subject the pet to pain.  These pets require more medical care than the pet owner can afford.

In an effort to raise awareness about this issue, the NAPHIA is encouraging pet owners to share their stories of recovery and compassion.  Grand prizes of $1,000 will be awarded to North America’s favorite pet story and North America’s favorite veterinary story.  In addition, the winner of each will choose a worthy animal shelter, pet rescue or pet health research group to receive a $1,000 donation.

This is a great way to gain awareness of pet health insurance http://www.ptzinsurance.com/metlife/, but the real winners of the North American Pet Health Insurance Month are the increasing numbers of pets that are protected and receiving needed care, explained Loran Hickton, executive director of NAPHIA.  “The NAPHIA receives call every week from pet owners that are trying to find resources to cover needed care.  Unfortunately, once the pet is diagnosed with a specific illness or injury insurance will not cover that immediate need.”

Additionally, the NAPHIA suggests pet owners review emergency care options that are normally provided through a veterinary hospital or clinic.

“Many of these emergency loan programs are life savers for pets.  Some provide an interest free loan so long as you pay within the allotted time,’ Hickton said.  “Like all credit products interest rates and conditions vary and the pet owner needs to carefully review the entire agreement.  Not paying the loan within the terms can be very expensive and the interest rates are high for unpaid balances.  Pet owners that make it through an emergency injury or illness without pet health insurance are very likely to purchase pet insurance for other potential needs in the future.”

Pet owners, care providers and shelter and rescue groups of the community are encouraged to send in stories and photographs of their pets for North America’s Favorite Pet Insurance Story and make a nomination for North America’s Favorite Veterinarian.  Both contests can be entered online at www.naphia.org/pet_health.month_2010.htm.

Founded in 2007, the NAPHIA is committed to educating and promoting the values and benefits of pet health insurance to North American pet owners, the public, and the veterinary industry.
