Friday, April 29, 2011, was one of the most talked about events of the year took place. In London, England Kate Middleton and Prince William were wed at the Westminster Abbey. At 4 a.m. eastern standard time, millions of people in the U.S. woke up to watch the royal event. The people of London, England gathered around the church to watch the couple arrive. Everyone's biggest question was what was the dress going to look like. Kate wore a white simple gown with a full skirt and lengthy train that was designed by Alexander McQueen Creative Director Sarah Burton.
The tiara that she chose to wear was the 1936 Cartier halo tiara which was lent to her by Queen Elizabeth. The tiara was purchased by King George VI for the Queen Mother, was presented to the Queen on her 18th birthday. Kate's dress was not the only thing that had people talking. The female guests who attended the wedding wore extravagant hats. Some had abstract designs and some were just simple.
After the service Kate and William traveled in a 1902 State Landau pulled by white horses along the processional route to Buckingham Palace. Along the processional route were more than five military bands from across the three service. Show tunes, pop songs, and sing-along songs filled the crowd lined streets.
At the Buckingham Palace the Queen gave a reception for around 650 guests. The wedding cake was also served at the reception. The cake was designed by Fiona Cairns. The cake was made from seventeen individual fruit cakes which made up the base and was followed by eight tiers. There were 900 individually iced flowers and leaves of seventeen varieties decorated on the cake. The couple left the Buckingham Palace just as they entered, with extravagance. Prince William drove an Aston Martin Volante DB6 MKII in seychelles blue, which was borrowed from his father. The evening party at the Buckingham palace was hosted by Prince Charles and only 300 of the new couples close friends and family members were invited.
The newly weds have decided to delay their honeymoon and stay in a private location in England for a week or two instead.
