American Idol Upset

~ contributed by Shannon Galaway, Social Media Intern
Last week on the 'American Idol' result show, America was shocked and angered by the results. The bottom three seemed to shock everyone when they saw that Pia Toscano, Stefano Lagone, and Jacob Lusk had received the least amount of votes that week. It then came down to Stefano Lagone and Pia Toscano. Many thought that Stefano would be eliminated. Although Stefano is very talented, he was the weaker performer when it came between him and Pia.
The lights finally dimmed and when the shows host, Ryan Seacrest, read the votes Pia Toscano was eliminated. Everyone was shocked and angry as boos filled the arena. The judges Steven Taylor, Randy Jackson, and Jennifer Lopez were all stunned and saddened by the results. Steven Tyler told America that their "lack of passion was unforgivable." A lot of people even thought Pia Toscano would have gone all the way in this competition. She had the whole package. She was beautiful and had an amazing voice. Pia remained poised as the result was revealed, but started to tear up when she saw her video clip about her journey on 'Idol.' The night before during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame themed show Toscano sang "River Deep Mountain High" and nailed it. Steven Tyler called her a murderer and said "You killed it." Jennifer Lopez said that Pia was really special on stage and Randy Jackson screamed "Pia's in it to win it." With such high praise the night before many voters probably though that everyone else would vote for her and their vote wouldn't matter. America was wrong. It goes to show that you always have to vote no matter what because your vote counts.

All the hype that followed the shocking result seemed to make everyone believe that every week she always had one of the largest amounts of votes. Suprisingly the show's executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, revealed that he always knows the votes and said that Pia was never a front runner. Lythgoe stated “The fact of the matter is that it appears that Pia didn’t connect with the audience as much as we maybe think she did,” he continued. “And she wasn’t voted through. That’s the fact of the matter.” Nigel is reminding America that every week they should expect to be shocked since there is so much talent on this season of 'Idol.' With the way the voting went this week, Nigel Lythgoe is hinting that the voting system for next year's season of 'Idol' may change and have a similar format as Lythgoe's other hit show 'So You Think You Can Dance.' America would vote for the bottom three and then the judges would decide who goes home. Until then America hopefully has learned their lesson and will actually vote for who they want to see stay.
